Irving Penn’s landmark centenary exhibition arrives in Spain
Where: The MOP Foundation, A Coruña, Spain
When: 23 November to 1 May 2025
Click: themopfoundation.org
Whether a black and white portrait of a gloved hand holding a shoe or a close-up of some freshly smoked Camels, in the hands of Irving Penn “the everyday object becomes extraordinary”, says Marta Ortega Pérez. Later this month, Ortega Pérez, the non-executive chair of Inditex, welcomes a retrospective of the photographer’s work at her MOP Foundation in A Coruña, Spain. Originally presented at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2017 to mark the centennial of Penn’s birth, the show encompasses the glamour of his haute-couture work; his meticulously arranged still-lifes; rougher-edged documentary street scenes; and his experiments in silver gelatin printmaking. It is, as Ortega Pérez says, a “wonderful odyssey”. Inès Cross

For a new series of images of the hotel, Walker turned to coloured filters to give them a nostalgic glow. Editions from the series will form part of the hotel’s collection, sitting alongside Terry O’Neill’s poolside portrait of Faye Dunaway and Mick Rock’s black-and-white photographic paean to David Bowie. Anastasia Samoylova explores how we reinvent the natural world
Where: Saatchi Gallery, London SW3
When: 5 November to 20 January 2025
Click: saatchigallery.com
Scrolling through copyright-free image libraries on the internet, Anastasia Samoylova was drawn to the generic shots of some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. She began printing out images of mangroves, glaciers, beaches and forests, folding them into shapes and assembling them into 3D sculptures, which she would then photograph in her Miami studio. She liked the process of turning them from data back into physical objects. The resulting collages will go on show in Samoylova’s survey exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery in November, alongside full-colour photographs of her hometown, some taken in the wake of Hurricane Irma in 2017, and shots of advertising billboards from around the world.
