Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
Do you think finance and economics are actually quite fun and interesting and wish there was a quiz that would allow you and your friends to show off your knowledge of money-adjacent trivia?
Do you wish that this quizzing could be accompanied by large platters of hearty food and a well-staffed bar? Would the prizes ideally be awe-inspiring T-shirt mash-ups of pop culture and finance, and an envy-inducing coffee mug fit for CHAMPIONS?
And are you in New York or within commuting distance on Nov 12?
Then you’re in luck!
This is a long-winded way of reminding people that FT Alphaville’s next pub quiz in New York is now less than three weeks away. Two-thirds of the tickets have already gone so if you haven’t organised your team yet you should get on it.
In case you want a warm-up, here’s a quick mix round of questions from some recent London quizzes to get those neurons firing:
-
What US stock has generated the greatest cumulative compounded return of all time?
-
Which branch of the US Federal Reserve hosts the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium?
-
In recent years bond king Bill Gross has sold off his vast collection of… what?
-
Bill Gates and Paul Allen formed their first software business while in high school. What did the software do?
-
Which JPMorgan analyst did Bloomberg once dub “Gandalf” for his magical stock market calls?
-
What was the first country to receive an IMF loan?
-
In which sport did Christine Lagarde represent France as a teenager?
-
Which celebrity is being described in this lawyer quote: “[He] is an actor, not a winemaker. He deals in illusions, not dirt and grapes”?
-
Which Hollywood actor has never dated Bill Ackman’s wife, according to Ackman?
-
Which central bank’s logo features a detailed drawing of a zebra?
(Answers at the bottom)
Smashed it, and hungry for more? Smashed by it, and hungry for more?
All the details can be found here, but here’s a recap on how to sign up:
Email [email protected] with the subject line PQNYCNOV24. We’d ideally like teams of six to maximise attendance (and, possibly, your chances of victory), so get emailing your nerdiest friends.
For your entry to be complete, you must CC all team members, give the mobile number of the team captain, and state your team’s name. Please also let us know if your team members have any dietary requirements so we can order appropriately.
If you want to come but are inadequately blessed with friends who think SOFR puns are delightful, then you can also sign up to be a straggler, and we’ll try to fit you on to a team with other ne’er-do-wells.
And thanks to our kind sponsor tastytrade the $35 tickets will include pretty much unlimited* food and at least two drinks per person. Which in NYC amounts to an absolute steal these days. 😱😱😱
*within the limits of reason.
